Internet Businesses – Arts and Crafts

One option for creating your own home based Internet business is to get into the arts and craft industry – essentially, to create and manufacture your own product lines and then sell them over the World Wide Web. If you have a hobby that somehow relates to arts and crafts, there is a good chance you could make money from it, be it as a nice sideline, way of earning extra pocket money or a real and profitable business that you can run from your own home.

Can you paint, sculpt, do woodcarvings, or create decorative fabrics, quilts and tapestries? Can you make pottery or vases, design baskets, beads and or other knick knacks and trinkets? If so, there is nothing stopping you from selling your creations online. There are numerous ways to sell your wares over the internet, among them Ebay and Etsy. While Ebay can of course be used to sell just about anything and everything, Etsy is a web site specifically designed as a place where artists and craftsmen can sell their creations to the general public.

Registering a business on Etsy is a very simple process, requiring just a home or business address, email address and credit card number – and a business name, of course. That’s it – and once your account is up and running, all you have to do is list the products you want to sell. It costs just twenty cents to list an item, and the item can be listed up to four months and advertised with up to four uploaded photographs at no extra charge. Etsy is not an auction site like Ebay, so just ask the price you want. It is an ideal place to sell homemade creations of all kinds. Etsy is becoming quite the business force – last year it tripled its sales over 2007, earning more than ninety million for its arts and craft business in just twelve months.

The arts and crafts industry is one of the few business that have not been largely unaffected by the global recession, but have actually flourished during it. Etsy and Ebay are not the only options available – there are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of sites where you can sell or advertise your products.

There are also other ways to promote your wares, of course, as with any other home based internet business, including creating a website and then using SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) tips to boost your visibility or promoting your business on other sites including social networking sites such as Facebook. There are even shopping community and blog sites devoted to reviewing unique products such as yours, which could send a lot of business your way, as well as adding yourself to the numerous art and craft search directories available online.

Handmade crafts and unique creations are a niche market, but it is a niche that, if you can get into, stands a very good chance of becoming a potentially very profitable home based internet business, and at very little risk. Time to get started now?
